No driver clutch operation
The vehicle changes gears automatically or through an automated manual system. The driver still manages speed, braking, mode selection and vehicle response.
Manual clutch and matched synchronisers
The gearbox assists gear engagement, but the driver must coordinate clutch, gear selection, road speed and engine response.
Manual speed matching
Often called crash or constant-mesh operation. Safe, smooth changes require accurate timing and supervised vehicle-specific training.
The assessment gearbox can affect your authorisation
Transport WA uses heavy-vehicle gearbox restrictions, including automatic and synchromesh conditions. The exact condition depends on the assessment vehicle and current rules.
Transport WA’s approved-RTO information also states that suitable HR vehicles can be used in certain circumstances to demonstrate gearbox skills when removing automatic or synchromesh restrictions from HC and MC licences; the applicable fee and procedure must be confirmed.

Planning
Select a suitable gear before intersections, grades, hazards and turns rather than changing late under pressure.
Smoothness
Avoid harsh driveline shock, missed gears, uncontrolled rolling or actions that distract from observation.
Speed and braking
Use the gearbox as part of a safe speed plan without over-relying on it or compromising steering and scanning.
Recovery
If a gear is missed, maintain control, follow the taught recovery method and never force a gear in panic.
