Heavy vehicle licence training process in WA
Understand the normal HR, HC and MC pathway before booking, including the checks that happen before the practical assessment.
The pathway is more than a driving lesson
Choose the correct class
Match the actual vehicle configuration to HR, HC or MC. Use job evidence and Transport WA’s class definitions.
Check licence history and status
Confirm how long you have held the required classes and that you are not provisional. Suspended or expired periods may not count.
Complete provider verification
For an approved-RTO pathway, the provider checks eligibility through LAPS and may require the E114 eligibility form, commercial eyesight result and other class-specific documents.
Complete the relevant training
HR commonly aligns with TLIC3004, HC with TLIC3005 and MC with TLIC4006. Training covers more than the final drive.
Demonstrate readiness
You should consistently perform inspections, vehicle control, observation, low-risk driving and class-specific tasks without unsafe prompting.
Complete the practical assessment
The authorised assessor follows the current method. For HC and MC, the published assessment information describes four parts and a minimum two-hour assessment including at least one hour on-road.
Finalise the licence application
Follow the provider and Transport WA instructions for endorsement, fees, restrictions and any remaining identity or medical requirements.
Competence is broader than passing one route
Preparation
Documents, vehicle suitability, pre-start and pre-trip checks, controls and fault reporting.
Vehicle handling
Moving off, steering, braking, gears, road position, turns, reversing and trailer tracking where relevant.
Risk management
Mirrors, scanning, speed choice, following distance, hazards, communication and low-risk decision-making.
A readiness recommendation is not automatically unfair
Extra training can be appropriate when it is linked to specific observed skills and explained before further payment. The warning sign is not the recommendation itself; it is surprise pricing, vague feedback or pressure after an unrealistic guarantee.
Ask for evidence
Which assessment criteria are not yet consistent? What specific practice is recommended?
Ask for options
Can you split sessions, change dates, seek another provider or obtain a written record of completed training?
Use paid truck time for practical learning
Always follow the provider’s instructions and the current official assessment information. Website learning material cannot replace supervised practical training.
