Truck licences in Perth: HR, HC and MC explained
Start with the vehicle you need to drive, check your licence history, then compare a transparent training pathway.
Three pathways, three different vehicle configurations
Heavy Rigid
For eligible rigid trucks with three or more axles and certain articulated buses.
- C class held at least 2 years
- National unit TLIC3004

Heavy Combination
For prime mover and single semi-trailer work, or a rigid vehicle towing a heavy trailer.
- C held 3 years plus MR/HR held 1 year
- National unit TLIC3005

Multi Combination

- Training and PDA through an approved RTO
Do these checks in this order
1. Match the actual job
Ask which truck and trailer combination the employer uses. Do not select a class only because it sounds more advanced.
2. Confirm eligibility
Suspended or expired licence periods may not count toward the required experience. Let an approved provider verify your record.
3. Check TAFE and funding
Fee-free or subsidised programs can be excellent value when you meet the entry rules and can commit to the schedule.
4. Compare the full cost
Ask about included hours, extra-hour pricing, assessment, retests, cancellations, vehicle and gearbox before paying.
A licence is not honestly guaranteed in one day
Some experienced learners may reach the required standard quickly. Others need more practice. A genuine provider explains this before booking and bases the plan on demonstrated readiness.
Not sure where to begin?
Tell us your current licence, how long you have held it, the work you want and your preferred timing. We can help you frame the right questions and, if requested, refer you to a suitable independent provider.
WA Truck Training is an information and referral service, not an RTO. Training, assessment, pricing and availability are provided by the school you choose. A referral fee may be received where disclosed.
