One week before

Confirm the booking details in writing

  • Licence class, date, arrival time and meeting location
  • Training and assessment vehicle configuration
  • Gearbox and likely licence restriction
  • Required identity, eligibility, eyesight and provider forms
  • Clothing, enclosed footwear and PPE
  • Fees already paid and fees due on the day
  • Cancellation, late-arrival and vehicle-failure arrangements
Know the method

HC and MC assessment has four published parts

PART 1

Pre-trip inspection

Identify and explain safety checks, vehicle condition and actions for faults.

PART 2

Uncouple and couple

Secure the combination, manage crush-zone risks and complete the class-specific task.

PART 3

Mid-trip inspection

Stop safely and confirm the combination remains roadworthy after movement.

PART 4

On-road drive

Demonstrate low-risk control, observation, positioning, speed and decision-making.

Published timing: the current HC/MC information sheet states a minimum two-hour assessment, including at least one hour of on-road driving. All four parts must be passed.

HR assessment arrangements differ. Ask the provider for the current HR method and vehicle standard.

Smooth steering, gears, braking and speed selection while maintaining observation.

Risk management

Mirrors, scanning, following distance, communication and early response to hazards.

Class-specific tasks

Inspection, trailer tracking, coupling or multi-combination control are consistent and explained clearly.

On the day

Protect your concentration

  1. Sleep properly and avoid alcohol or any substance that can impair driving.
  2. Eat, hydrate and allow extra travel time.
  3. Bring the required documents and corrective lenses.
  4. Listen to the full instruction before acting; ask when wording is unclear.
  5. If you make a minor mistake, maintain control and continue safely rather than rushing.
  6. Do not argue while the vehicle is moving. Use the feedback process after the task.
