HR licence theory practice: 20 questions with explained answers

Six areas to understand before you test yourself

Do not memorise a list without understanding the reason behind it. A safe HR driver connects every check and decision to vehicle control, road-user safety and workplace procedure.

Know the vehicle and your authority to drive it

  • An HR class vehicle has at least three axles and a GVM above 8,000 kg.
  • Know the transmission fitted and any licence restriction that applies.
  • Follow current licence conditions, road rules, medical requirements and workplace procedures.

Complete a disciplined pre-start

  • Walk around the vehicle and check tyres, wheels, leaks, body, load, lights, mirrors and safety equipment.
  • Check fluids, controls, gauges, warning systems and the service and parking brakes.
  • Record and report defects. Do not take an unsafe vehicle onto the road.

Manage the size and weight of an HR vehicle

  • Leave more room, scan well ahead and use mirrors often.
  • Allow for blind spots, rear-wheel cut-in, a higher centre of gravity and longer stopping distances.
  • Select a suitable gear before a descent and use smooth steering, braking and acceleration.

Plan the route and secure the load

  • Confirm height, width, mass, access restrictions and bridge or structure clearances.
  • Use the correct restraint system, distribute the load properly and recheck it during the journey.
  • Check whether a Main Roads WA permit or order is required for a Restricted Access Vehicle.

Control hazards, fatigue and emergencies

  • Slow down early, increase space and drive to the conditions.
  • Treat yawning, poor concentration and slow reactions as warnings to stop safely and rest.
  • Know your workplace response for breakdowns, tyre or brake problems, load loss, crashes and fire.

Finish the job safely

  • Park where the vehicle will not obstruct traffic or create a hazard.
  • Stop, select neutral or park, apply the parking brake, shut down and remove the key.
  • Exit with three points of contact, secure the vehicle and complete required records.
