Six areas to understand before you test yourself
HC driving joins a powered vehicle and a heavy trailer into one system. Safe decisions depend on checking the coupling, anticipating the trailer path and keeping the whole combination stable.
Know what HC authorises
- HC includes a prime mover with one semi-trailer, or a rigid vehicle towing a trailer with a GVM over 9,000 kg.
- Your licence conditions and any transmission restriction still apply.
- Confirm the exact vehicle is suitable for training, assessment and the intended task.
Couple in a controlled sequence
- Secure both units, inspect the fifth wheel or towing connection and align squarely.
- Check trailer height, kingpin or drawbar components, locking devices, airlines and electrical leads.
- Visually confirm engagement and complete the required tug and brake checks before moving off.
Inspect the complete combination
- Check every tyre, wheel, light, reflector, brake connection and safety device.
- Build air pressure, listen for leaks and test service, parking and trailer brake operation.
- Record defects and keep an unsafe vehicle out of service.
Control articulation and trailer path
- Allow for rear-wheel cut-in, tail swing, blind areas and the risk of jack-knifing.
- Plan turns early and use frequent mirror checks.
- Reverse slowly, use a competent guide where available, and stop to reset if the angle becomes unsafe.
Plan load, route and access
- Confirm dimensions, axle and combination mass, load distribution and restraint.
- Check whether the route is approved for the combination and whether an order or permit applies.
- Recheck the load and all coupling points at safe opportunities.
Manage speed, fatigue and faults
- Choose a suitable gear before a descent and use smooth, approved braking methods.
- Treat fatigue signs as a direction to stop safely and rest, not something to push through.
- Know the workplace procedure for low air pressure, tyre failure, breakdown, load movement and incident reporting.
