Six areas to understand before you test yourself

MC vehicles add more articulation, more coupling points and often stricter route conditions. The safe driver checks each section of the combination and plans how every trailer will respond.

Understand the MC class

  • MC authorises a heavy combination towing multiple heavy trailers, such as approved B-double or road train configurations.
  • Transport WA currently requires the relevant prior licence experience before an MC upgrade.
  • Licence authority does not replace route, mass, dimension or operating-condition requirements.

Check every coupling point

  • Secure each unit and inspect turntables, kingpins, drawbar eyes, pins, locking devices and safety connections as fitted.
  • Connect and support airlines and electrical leads so they cannot stretch, chafe or snag.
  • Complete visual confirmation, tug tests, brake checks and a final walk-around for the whole combination.

Plan for amplified movement

  • Each articulation point changes trailer response, cut-in and rear swing.
  • Use smooth steering and braking, and scan the mirrors across the full length of the combination.
  • For reversing, use very small corrections and reset early rather than allowing angles to build.

Verify the exact route authority

  • Identify the precise combination category, approved RAV network and operating conditions.
  • Check current travel impacts, restrictions, permits or orders immediately before operating where required.
  • Do not rely on a general car navigation route for heavy vehicle access.

Manage mass, load and restraint

  • Check total and axle-group mass limits for the actual configuration and authority.
  • Distribute the load to maintain steering, braking and roll stability across all units.
  • Use suitable restraints and recheck the load and coupling areas during the journey.
