MC Assessment Preparation WA

Prepare for the Multi Combination assessment in the vehicle class you will drive. This page keeps MC guidance separate from HR and HC, with a visual guide to the four assessment parts.

Visual overview

One MC assessment, four connected parts

Your assessor observes how you inspect, connect and control an approved multi-combination vehicle—not just how it travels on a straight road.

The four MC assessment parts

1

Pre-trip inspection

Systematically inspect the prime mover, trailers, tyres, lights, brakes, air and safety equipment. Explain what you are checking and why it matters.

2

Uncouple and couple

Use the assessor's nominated sequence, control the area, manage air and electrical lines, secure the equipment and complete the final physical checks.

3

Mid-trip inspection

Choose or use a safe stopping place, walk around the full combination, find developing issues and communicate the result clearly.

4

On-road driving

Show observation, planning, lane position, speed control, safe gaps, mirror use, compliant turns and smooth control of the complete combination.

Plan enough time: the published HC/MC method allocates a minimum of two hours, including at least one hour on-road. You must pass all four parts. Follow the current assessor and Transport WA requirements if they change.
Before assessment day

Practise the complete process

  • Say inspection points aloud and connect each item to a safety risk.
  • Walk the same coupling sequence every time; do not rely on memory shortcuts.
  • Practise wide turns, trailer tracking, lane discipline and mirror scanning.
  • Plan braking and speed changes earlier for the length and mass of the combination.
  • Know when to stop, reassess and ask for an instruction to be repeated.
