Prepare for a prime mover with one semi-trailer. The HC assessment method is separate from HR and MC, with four published parts: pre-trip inspection, uncoupling and coupling, mid-trip inspection and an on-road drive.

The published method
Pass all four parts
Pre-trip inspection
Identify and explain the required safety checks for the prime mover, semi-trailer and connection points.
Uncouple and couple
Secure the combination, manage hazards and complete the class-specific procedure in the correct sequence.
Mid-trip inspection
Stop safely and confirm that the connected vehicle remains roadworthy after movement.
On-road drive
Demonstrate observation, lane position, speed selection, turning clearance and stable vehicle control.
What to practise
Safe, repeatable procedures
Inspection knowledge
- Tyres, wheels, lights and body condition.
- Air lines, electrical connection and fifth wheel.
- Trailer supports, load security and signs of defects.
Combination control
- Allow for trailer tracking and turning clearance.
- Use mirrors early and maintain safe lane position.
- Control speed before bends, gradients and hazards.
